BREATHE-EASY FLOORING OPTIONS FOR THOSE WITH ALLERGIES AND/OR ASTHMA
Spring is a good reminder that many of us live with allergies and/or asthma. While most people believe triggers are from strictly outdoor sources, science tells us that we could be sensitive to items in our own home, including flooring.
There are plenty of suitable products on the market including: hardwood, cork flooring, laminate, luxury vinyl tile and sheet vinyl, and yes, even carpet. It comes down to individual preferences based on how best we feel we can manage our symptoms.
Hard surface floors such as: hardwood, cork, laminate, luxury vinyl tile and sheet vinyl are good options since they are easy to clean and maintain. Hard surface flooring doesn’t trap allergens nor does it provide an environment for them to grow, and cork flooring inhibits the growth of mould, mildew, bacteria and other allergens.
The benefit of having a hard surface floor is the flexibility to add an area rug to the mix. Not only does it add a decorative touch, it can easily be removed for thorough and regular cleaning.
In some areas of our home, however, wall-to-wall carpeting is our preferred flooring choice. In these cases, organizations such as the Ontario Lung Association, suggest a low-emission carpet and regular cleaning with a vacuum that uses a HEPA filter. A low-emission carpet will prevent off-gassing that can occur during installation, a common trigger especially for people with asthma. Regular cleaning with a high-efficiency filter helps to remove any trapped allergens that could trigger symptoms.
As with other items in our home such as furniture, bedding and curtains, regular cleaning is even more important for those of us who live with allergies and/or asthma.
